Rupert Knight

Assistant Professor, Faculty of Social Sciences



Dr Rupert Knight joined the University of Nottingham in April 2014 and is an Assistant Professor in Primary Education. He currently teaches on School Direct Primary, PGCE international (as Regional Coordinator for the Middle East) and MA courses. Prior to this, he held a similar position at the University of Derby (2006-2014) working on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate Initial Teacher Education programmes (B.Ed, PGCE, School Direct), as well as contributing to the MA in Education. In March 2016, Rupert was accredited as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Before working in ITE, Rupert was a teacher in primary schools in London and Nottingham and his various roles included Advanced Skills Teacher, Leading Behaviour Teacher and Assistant Head Teacher.

Expertise Summary

Rupert's primary education expertise and interests include:

  • teachers as professionals
  • classroom talk and collaboration.
  • pedagogies for primary education, especially in mathematics
  • primary teachers' subject knowledge
  • pupil behaviour in the primary classroom

Rupert's doctoral research focused on teacher education and postgraduate students' understanding of the relationship between theory and practice in learning to teach.
