This studio provided opportunities for us to engage with live projects and the master planning developer. Trafford Waters project aims to design a sustainable mixed-use community, including residential, education, retail, leisure, and offices. Our design concept is the '8-minute living community'. This works to make sure that different groups of people can get facilities and supports within an 8-minute (200m) radius. The detailed design is focused on the waterfront areas. It took advantage of the existing water features within site and extended them to create a pedestrian pathway with a water feature, which is linked to the Manchester Ship Canal walkway. In addition, to meet the different needs of people within 8 minutes, each building was divided into different functions according to a radius of 200 meters. At the same time, the offices, restaurants, and commercial shops can provide economic support for the community's sustainability and ultimately create a liveable community.
Student Biography I am a postgraduate student in Architectural Design. This was a good chance for me to participate in the Trafford Waters project, which helped me find an interest in urban design. The studio leader Dr Amy Tang and tutors Anran Chen and Ahmed Ehab Abdelsalam are very kind and have greatly inspired me. I learned much practical knowledge from the studio. It was a great learning experience!
