Exhibit 2021 - Architecture End of Year Show
Every year we celebrate and showcase the work of our students. In 2021 they worked harder than ever, not allowing a global pandemic to disrupt their studies.
This years end of year show took place both in person at St Mary’s Church in Nottingham City Centre, between the 10 July 2021 until the 13 July 2021, and digitally with students work being posted online. This way even people who could not travel due to the pandemic could view the amazing work our students had completed.

2018
Beginnings, Middles and Ends – Miralles Tagliabue Architects Barcelona
We are pleased to announce number 10 in the exhibition series BM&E features the work of Miralles Tagliabue architects from Barcelona. This internationally renowned practice who were responsible for the Scottish Parliament Building is providing a case study of the Santa Catarina Market project in Barcelona.
The exhibition opens Tuesday 27 February 2018 and continues through until Friday 22 June 2018. To coincide with the exhibition, Igor Peraza (Project Director) will lecture on the work featured in the exhibition and also talk more generally about the ethos and working method of the practice.
2017
Beginnings, Middles and Ends - Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners
We are pleased to announce number 9 in the exhibition series featuring the work of Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners.
Over the past four decades, RSHP has attracted critical acclaim and awards with built projects across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia.
The exhibition opens on Tuesday 28 March 2017 and continues through until 23 June 2017. To coincide with the opening of the exhibition, Graham Stirk (Senior Partner) will lecture on the practice's work and in particular the Bodegas Protos winery in Spain.
Completed in 2008, the project was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2009 and was awarded the RIBA European Award in the same year.
2016
Beginnings, Middles and Ends – Walters & Cohen Architects
We are pleased to announce number 8 in the exhibition series featuring the work of Walters & Cohen Architects.
The exhibition opens Tuesday 25 October 2016 and continues through until December 16 2016. To coincide with the opening of the exhibition, Michál Cohen (Director) will lecture on the practice's work.
The exhibition features an early work undertaken in Durban South African; the gallery for the KwaZulu Natal Society of Arts.Cindy Walters and Michál Cohen were awarded the AJ Woman Architect of the Year award in 2013.
The practice has won numerous RIBA & Civic Trust Awards.
2016
Beginnings, Middles and Ends - A2 Architects
We are pleased to announce number 7 in the exhibition series featuring the work of A2 Architects from Dublin. The exhibition opens Friday 22 April 2016 and continues through until June 17 2016. To coincide with the opening of the exhibition, Peter Carroll (Director) will lecture on the practice's work.
The exhibition features two projects by the practice, PULP PRESS, NORWAY

Number 6 in the series of exhibitions and lectures showing work by some of the UK and Ireland's top practices features the award winning Manchester School of Art building by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.

Confirmed - To coincide with the opening of the architecture exhibition of his practice's work, Merritt Bucholz will give a lecture on the 15 of May at 2pm in the Environmental Education Centre (EEC) Crit Space. The lecture is open to all.
Beginnings, Middles and Ends - Jonathan Hendry
We are pleased to announce that the next architecture exhibition in the Beginnings, Middles & Ends series featuring the work of Jonathan Hendry Architects starts on Wednesday 11 March. Jonathan Hendry runs a small award winning practice. In 2011 Jonathan won the prestigious Young Architect of the Year Award. The exhibition is in the Environmental Education Centre foyer space. We are pleased that Jonathan has agreed to talk about his work on Tuesday 24 March at 11.30 in the EEC Crit Space. The exhibition and lecture are open to the public by prior arrangement.
2014
Work Returns From Cley Exhibition
Our Architecture and Built Environment's Unit 4’s year 2 & 3 architectural project work has been on display at the Cley Contemporary Art Exhibition this summer. Selected housing projects on a selected site in Cley next to Sea, Norfolk, together with a series of Follies on the Shingle Bank will form the Unit’s exhibition.
The work has now been returned to the Department and is available to view in our Sustainable Research Building.

Capturing the essence of a large academic department’s activities over the course of a year is not an easy brief, but the University of Nottingham Architecture End of Year Show attempts to do just that. Like the Department of Architecture and Built Environment itself, the show foregrounds design excellence and promotes inclusivity, displaying the sheer quality and diversity of output from students in Year 1 through to Masters and Diploma level. The work evidences both conceptual rigour and technical competence, and the stunning images – created in an array of media and with multiple techniques – are matched by creativity, with imaginative flair being apparent across the full range of design scales and project types.
The show will also see a number of student prizes handed out, to recognise design and academic excellence. We'd like to thank the sponsors below for supporting these awards;

Nott: Just a City
Nott: Just a City is an annual exhibition held by the Nottingham and Derby Society of Architects (NDSA) with the aim to engage the public of Nottingham with the role architecture plays in shaping the city. The exhibition takes place from the 7th – 19th April, and will be held in the Pod on Fletcher Gate in Nottingham City Centre. The exhibition takes the form of around 40 projects created by local architecture practices, students from Nottingham Trent and students from our own department here – the common theme being that they are all sited in Nottingham, and as such, demonstrate how architecture can play a positive role in the city’s future. From our own department Alisdair Gray, Amarveer Singh Bains, Emma Eady, Funsho Parrott, Jack Broad, Jo Hart, Joseph Yates, Josephine Dorling, Josh Hovey, Kaplan Pirgon, Martynas Vielavicius, Matthew Humphries, Samuel Critchlow and Vikash Patel will all be exhibiting projects (ranging from year 1 to year 6 work).
Coming Soon - Cley Contemporary Art Exhibition
Over 6000 visitors will see the work of Unit 4’s year 2 & 3 architectural project work during the Cley Contemporary Art Exhibition this summer. Selected housing projects on a selected site in Cley next to Sea, Norfolk, together with a series of Follies on the Shingle Bank will form the Unit’s exhibition.

Some of the most creative architectural minds from around the world have come to the RA to give you a new perspective on architecture and transform our Main Galleries with a series of large scale installations.
As you respond to different structures, textures, lighting, scents and colours, we invite you to consider some of the big questions about the nature of architecture; how do spaces make us feel? What does architecture do for our lives?

Beginnings, Middles & Ends - 4 February 2014
Beginnings, Middles & Ends, the title given to a series of exhibitions that will explore how some of the leading UK architectural practices develop their conceptual ideas, through design and construction development into a realized building.
We are pleased to announce that the second exhibition in the series on 4 February 2014 and features the Stonebridge Hillside Hub Project, London Cullinan Studio.
Completed in 2009 the Stonebridge Hillside Hub has a pivotal role in the emerging master plan for the Stonebridge Estate in West London. It is a mixed use building, where the careful juxtaposition of uses means that each benefits from exposure to the others.
The exhibition continues until 14 March 2014.
Qing Imperial Cityscapes Exhibition - 11 January - 2 March 2014
Qing Imperial Cityscpaes, an exhibition which looks at the work of Yangshi Lei - the architectural dynasty - who took charge of most of the Qing Emperor's construction projects during the last empire of China (1644 - 1911). Yangshi Lei's projects form one one of the keystones of world cultural heritage and in this small selection taken from historic manuscripts, we focus on the beauty of the Forbidden City.
With thanks to Dr Qi Wang for his assistance in organizing this exhibition, and to Professor Qiheng Wang of Tianjin University for permission and Natural Science Foundation of China to reproduce items from Yangshi Lei Architectual Archives.
The full exhibition can be seen in the Department of Architecture and Built Environment and the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies during the same period.
Lakeside Exhibition
2013
1st place in the international ASHRAE Integrated Sustainable Building Design Award 2013
Awarded to Jiayi Qiu, Dalin Si, Yakai Wu, Zhongzhe Wu, Ruijun Zhang, Zhiang Zhang and Xuyang Zhong (3rd Year students from the BEng in Architectural Environment Engineering). The group will receive $2000, plus expenses paid trip to New York.

Beginnings, Middles & Ends, the title given to a series of exhibitions that will explore how some of the leading UK architectural practices develop their conceptual ideas, through design and construction development into a realized building.
The Department of Architecture and Built Environment is planning to use a new exhibition space to host a series of exhibitions that will study how architects take their work from an initial concept, through the detail design and construction stage to completion of the building.
The first exhibition opens on 29 October and showcases the award winning Downley House by Birds Portchmouth Russum Architects.
1st Place Prizes in the CIBSE 2013 - 9 October 2013
1st place in the CIBSE Young Engineer Award 2013: William Holley
Ten finalists, from top universities such as Cambridge, UCL, Loughborough and Sheffield, were challenged to demonstrate their presenting and communication skills to a panel of expert judges. Will took the top award after impressing the judges with a personal account of his experiences working on a nursery school project in a rural South Africa province and identifying the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach to design.
He received a cash bursary from the Rumford Club during a ceremony at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London and will receive an expenses paid trip to New York as a VIP delegate for the ASHRAE conference.
Will graduated with a 1st class MEng in Architecture and Built Environment from the University of Nottingham in 2013 and now works as a graduate engineer at Buro Happold’s Bath office.
1st place in the CIBSE President’s Prize:
Undergraduate Award 2013 Sophie Naylor Sophie, who graduated in 2013 with a 1st class Bachelor’s in Architectural Environment Engineering, won with a project entitled ‘Application of Biomimetics to Improve Capillary Transport in Heat Pipes’, conducted under the supervision of Prof Yuying Yan. Sophie was presented with a £500 prize and trophy at the annual CIBSE President’s Dinner. The award, sponsored by Hays Building Services, is designed to encourage students to develop their potential and aim for excellence. It is awarded to students in their final year of a building services course accredited by CIBSE, recognising their academic achievements at the end of their course of study.
Sophie has chosen to continue her studies at the University, and is now studying for a PhD in the Architecture, Climate and Environment Research Group, sponsored by Laing O’Rourke through an EPSRC Doctoral Training Grant Case Award.
Student Work Exhibited at Miller’s Dale
During the summer, work from Unit 5A went on display in Miller’s Dale in the Peak District. Students had spent a year working on a variety of projects that tested ideas about building in one of the UK’s largest National Parks.
The Balcony Gallery Exhibition - 28 January - 22 March 2013
The Balcony Gallery Exhibition - To celebrate the recent successes of the Department’s students in the prestigious RIBA President’s Medals Student Awards the next exhibition on the Balcony Gallery in the EEC is showcasing award winning entries together with shortlisted entries and a selection of other submitted projects.
Each year work by 2 undergraduate and 2 Diploma students is submitted for these awards by the Department. The RIBA President Medals Awards are open to all Schools of Architecture, both from the UK and internationally. Over the last 7 years the awards received by the University of Nottingham’s students would place it 3rd in best performing architecture schools. If in addition one takes into account the shortlisting of work to the RIBA public exhibition then Nottingham’s performance in recent years has been exceptional.

Prototyping Architecture Exhibition 11 January - 20 March 2013
Prototyping Architecture Exhibition takes place at The Building Centre London - Prototyping Architecture brings together the work of architects, engineers, manufacturers, product designers, academics and artists to explore the importance of prototypes in the delivery of high quality contemporary design. Placing a particular emphasis on research and experimentation, this exhibition in Nottingham and London, shows how trial assemblies can inform architecture - with maquette’s, models and full-scale sample productions on show from around the world.
The show includes prototypes by Amanda Levete Architects, Barkow Leibinger, KieranTimberlake, Philip Beesley Architects Inc, Yves Ebnoether and many more.
The exhibition includes work made by Diploma students from the University of Nottingham.
To co-inside with the Prototyping Architecture Exhibition an International Conference - Prototyping Architecture will take place at The Building Centre 21 to 23 February 2013.
Curated by Professor Michael Stacey of The University of Nottingham, in conjunction with The Building Centre.

Winners of the Sports Training Facility Competition - 4 - 14 December 2013
During the 2012 summer break, the 1st and 2nd year students of the BArch and MEng courses were asked to undertake a short design assignment in preparation for their coming years.
Set as a competition, the topical brief challenged the student to design a training facility for a sport of their choice in a location appropriate to the activity and known to them.
213 entries were received and judged by a panel of academics from the department. On Tuesday 4th December the winners were announced at a ceremony at the EEC balcony gallery.

Jamie Ward and Maria Krasteva represented the Department at John McAslan and Partners Open Studio event at the Practice’s offices in central London. Two graduating Part 1 students form a number of top Schools in the UK were invited to exhibit two of their student’s work.

Exhibition of work by Year 2 and Year 3 BArch students from Unit 4 at the Grade 2 Listed Chantry Bridge Chapel, Wakefield adjacent to the new Hepworth Gallery. Having studied Wakefield this year the exhibition will show strategies and building proposals for the central area of Wakefield.

Royal Academy Success
Work by Rachel Grigor, year 1 studio unit leader, has been selected to hang in this year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. The world’s largest open submission contemporary art show, now in its 244th year, continues the tradition of showcasing work by emerging and established artists in all media including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, architecture and film. The show was on from 4 June to 12 August 2012. This is the second time within three months that Rachel’s work has been shown at the Royal Academy. In April as part of the London Original Print Fair her work was represented by the Brook Gallery.
March 2012
Year 2 BArch and MEng students have been placed second at Ecobuild 2012. The award for the design and construction of The Nottingham Shipping Shelter ‘A Fleeting Retreat’ was presented by the UK Green Building Council for demonstrating excellence in the consideration of environmental and social impact.
