Emma Archer

Crocus Place

A live-work co-housing scheme in Nottingham’s edgelands, adjacent to Nottingham railway station. The aim of the shelter designed within this scheme will allow for a long term solution to providing homes for women escaping domestic violence.

Through architecture a safe, restorative space will be created to allow victims to grow, rehabilitate and heal as part of a community. A considered reflection of how historical architectural precedents of refuges and women’s shelters map the priorities of each stakeholder allowing for the proposed design to become an evolution.

The Architectural form takes reference from Nottingham railway and the previously demolished Arkwright Station showing the arch transposed throughout the site as not only a historic reference but also a symbol of strength and support. The diversification supports a sustainable living model for the residents and promotes new opportunity to the wider community via the active edges, encouraging engagement with the site.
