Biographical details

From Bogotá, he married Francisca Moreno. Their son, José Gregorio Gutiérrez Moreno married Antonia Vergara Sanz de Santamaría. A supporter of the independence cause, he was imprisoned in Omoa prison with Andrés Rodríguez, Sinforoso Mutis, Camilo Manrique and others. His son, José Gregorio was executed by the royalists in July 1816. Two hours later, he wrote words of comfort to Vergara Sanz de Santamaría from his prison cell (reproduced below).
