She was a member of the Garaicoa family from Guayaquil. Estrada writes of her "hermosísima amistad" with Bolívar. They addressed each other "mi glorioso" and "la gloriosa". (Estrada, 40)

Neuhaus reproduces a letter from Bolívar dated 14 December 1822. (Neuhaus Rizo, 136-137)
