Cartographic Unit

map

The Cartographic Unit based in the School of Geography is staffed by Elaine Watts, an experienced cartographer and Fellow of the British Cartographic Society.

A high-quality cartographic design service is provided using the latest industry techniques to meet customer requirements.

Services

The Cartographic Unit produces original, high-quality maps and diagrams to support teaching and research in the School of Geography, many of which appear in publications. Cartographic advice and assistance is also provided to all students in the school. Mapping a subject, even one that may not appear to lend itself readily, can add richness to learning and research.

This cartographic service is available to the wider academic and research community within the university. Elaine has produced maps for many other academic schools including history, politics and international relations, nursing, life sciences, music and for Nottingham Conferences.

External non-university enquiries for map production are also welcome. Elaine has previously produced work for Lonely Planet, Rainbows Hospice and the Nottinghamshire Diocese.

Map production

The unit produces a wide variety of maps, diagrams and plans to publication standard from author's originals, published map sources and maps from the school's map archive.

Work produced includes campus maps, conference material, building plans, maps for publication, brochures, exam diagrams and research reports. Output can be imported, edited and exported in a variety of file formats. All work is backed-up and archived for future use.

Edwards Resource Centre map archive

Within the School of Geography is the Edwards Resource Centre which contains the school's map collection. This is an extensive collection of UK and foreign maps. Maps from this archive are often used as source material for work produced in the Cartographic Unit.

This collection is available to other members of the university by prior appointment. Please contact Elaine to discuss access.

I offer student support for all undergraduates and postgraduates, whether it’s sourcing maps, designing maps or drawing maps. I teach the fundamentals of good map design and all students are encouraged to map their own research. By doing this, it enables them to identify trends and patterns, and by mapping it and looking at it spatially, other questions then appear which can enhance their quality of work and writing as a whole.
