Join the next generation of research leaders in geography

Applications are invited for Nottingham Research and Anne McLaren Fellowships in the School of Geography. The fellowships provide three years of independent research funding, and are linked to a permanent academic position.

The school particularly welcomes applications in the following areas:

• Geographical Political Economies
• Glacial Geomorphology

Geographical political economies: We particularly welcome applications that approach economic geography in ways that are attuned to the cultural, political and social dimensions of economic life, and with a strong commitment to rigorous empirical research drawing from a diverse range of possible methodologies. Areas of focus may include the study of global transformations, including the role of digital and logistical infrastructures, migration, inequality, gender politics and uneven development. The School has a long standing research focus on money and finance – including geographies of financial exclusion and inclusion, new financial spaces and practices, and processes of financialization – and on geographies of creativity, knowledge and consumption – including research on key creative industries such as fashion and music, as well as the role of knowledge production in shaping the contemporary global economy.

Glacial geomorphology: Our long-term strategy is to strengthen our research and teaching in the area of geomorphology. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with an exciting track record of research on glacial systems and landform processes, who would develop leadership in this field, thereby complementing existing expertise in fluvial and dryland systems in the school. The school has a vibrant Geosciences research group, which currently encompasses research into environmental change in Polar Regions. The group includes a growing cohort of postdoctoral researchers, and an active postgraduate community, including NERC-funded PhD students via our ENVISION doctoral training programme within a supportive and dynamic research environment. The school has close links with the British Geological Survey, located close to Nottingham, which would provide a fellow with exceptional opportunities for developing inter-institutional research links.

Both Fellowship schemes offer:

• Three years’ independent research funding, covering salary costs at c.£39,000-£48,000.
• The link to a permanent academic post, subject to performance.
• Additional funding for research expenses totalling £75,000.
• Childcare costs of up to £5,000 per annum.
• Access to mentoring, career development and networking with the wider fellowship community.

Anne McLaren Fellowships are aimed at outstanding female scholars in science, technology, engineering and medicine at the early stage of their academic careers, who are typically under-represented in these subjects, and wish to establish a research career in the UK.

Nottingham Research Fellowships are targeted at exceptional postdoctoral researchers in all academic disciplines represented at the University.

The expected start date for successful fellows is June 2020.

We support applicants from diverse career paths and backgrounds. We also welcome applications from those wishing to work part-time to meet personal responsibilities.
