IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism

The University has referred to the IHRA working definition of antisemitism since 2017, and formally adopted it in 2019 to inform our approaches to equality, diversity and inclusion as well as using it as a reference point for the operation of the University’s Code of Discipline. University Executive Board, at its meeting on 29 July 2020, agreed that the formal adoption of the IHRA definition by the University should continue (minute CR.20.59):

Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.

The University has also adopted the All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims’ working definition of Islamophobia for the same purposes.
