Ensure a safe environment – consider who can overhear and where you are talking / who is present.
Use risk assessment – such as the DASH RIC – to guide your onward referral and discussions with other agencies such as Women’s Aid.
Speak to the specialist team for advice, eg safeguarding team or DVA nurse specialist.
Early intervention is key.
Consider vulnerable/hard to reach groups
Remember that disclosure is difficult, and people may present in ways that do not obviously indicate the wider picture.
Be professionally curious.
If children are part of the family picture, a discussion must take place with the lead for safeguarding in your area – this might mean discussing with the local Children's Safeguarding Board
