Scenario 1
- James is 21 and has been admitted to hospital with three fractured ribs and a possible fractured wrist. He has a history of three attendances in the past 12 months, all with fractures and bruising from different accidents. You note in his Emergency Department record that he was bought up by foster parents and left home at the age of 16 when he first met his partner Frederick.
- Frederick, who appears to be much older than James, is with him in the Emergency Department and even accompanied him into the x ray room, saying that James was ‘frightened’ of hospitals. James appears quiet and withdrawn. You ask him how he received his injuries & he tells you he fell down the stairs.
- When you speak to the doctor who has seen James, he tells you that James stated he fell over outside in the icy weather.
