Scenario 2

  • Alice is 35 years old and 3 months pregnant. She is an inpatient on the gynecology ward following bleeding and a suspected / threatened miscarriage. You have been asked by the doctor to accompany him in examining Alice.
  • Alice’s partner Simon is with her and has stayed all night, as she was admitted at midnight. He hasn’t left her side, and the nurse who handed over to you commented how ‘lovely’ and ‘attentive’ has was.
  • The doctor asks Simon to step outside while he examines Alice – Simon refuses. As the doctor moves to perform an ultrasound scan on Alice, you notice 2 large black bruises on her stomach.
  • Alice begins to cry. Simon rolls his eyes & tells you “she fell over the bloody cat – she didn’t want to mention it to you in case you thought she was going to be a crap parent’.

  • How might you ensure Alice is given privacy to discuss how the bruises occurred?
