Relationships with peers

Belonging to a friendship group offers companionship and a sense of closeness. This can provide a sense of belonging which can be very important at this time of role confusion for young people and changing parental relationships.

All young people have some conflicts in their friendships and peer groups. Those who have good relationships will find ways of resolving their differences. They can remain friendly even when close friendships dissolve or weaken over time.

The desire to conform and be accepted may lead to engaging in some activities they may not usually do such as smoking, drinking or drug use. Some peer groups may have a negative influence on an individual if they validate behaviour and values that are not acceptable in wider society. Young people who mix with less positive groups are at greater risk of antisocial behaviour and emotional difficulties. During middle adolescence, there is a belief that they will be unaffected by potential harmful consequences.

Young people who are not well liked by their peers tend to interact poorly and may struggle to resolve conflicts. They often have some additional difficulties and may be anxious, vulnerable to bullying, unassertive or, on the other hand, aggressive and disruptive.
