Introduction
The majority of young people start assuming adult responsibilities between the ages of 11 and 16 years, such as completing mandatory schooling, finding their first job, figuring out romantic relationships and learning how to be a good friend.
During adolescence, intellectual development continues as a result of further changes in the brain. Intellectual development over this period of time includes the move towards more abstract ways of thinking which influences the young person’s world-view and their view of themselves within that world.
Increased confidence in their own abilities may also lead to a greater propensity to indulge in risk taking, whilst at the same time considering issues of fairness and justice.
Young people also develop positive attributes through learning and experience. Overall, the larger community plays a fundamental and essential role in helping young people move successfully into adulthood.
