Brain development

The brain is still developing during this age range. The limbic system which has roles in emotional responses is still developing. As the limbic system contains the reward centres of the brain, these developments might drive a propensity for risk and thrill seeking. This may be why the adolescent can appear both egocentric and selfish.

However this is mitigated by further development of the prefrontal cortex which supports rational thought and planning and impulse control.
