Supporting students
Schools have been asked to make local plans to minimise disruption for students where possible, for example: effective communications where specific seminars or lectures are likely to be disrupted; exploring provision to recover any lost learning activities; maintaining or revising assessment deadlines; and preparing for complaints or requests for extenuating circumstances.
Module convenors and supervisors are encouraged to explore options to reschedule sessions for non-strike days where possible, or to provide alternative support. The principle of alternative support is that it should prevent students from being disadvantaged as a result of strike action. Alternative support may take the form of, for example, email/phone/skype consultations, additional formative feedback, directed reading or direction to online materials.
Unless a class has been disrupted, normal attendance monitoring will take place. The student Attendance Policy means students must attend all activities to pursue their studies.
Lecture capture recordings must not be used to cover for a staff member exercising their legal right to take industrial action without their consent. In all cases, managers and staff are strongly encouraged to be mindful of the University’s policies and guidelines on the use of lecture capture as well as student study platforms such as Moodle.
