Visiting Scholars pre-2013


2011/12

 

Professor Almudena Rodríguez Moya from Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia, Madrid (UNED) was a visiting scholar at the HRLC from January 2011 to September 2011. Professor Moya's research focused upon Immigration, integration and human rights, specifically obligations of multinational corporations (MNCs) and other business enterprises.

Dr Nezir Akyeşilmen from the Department of International Relations, Selcuk University, Turkey, joined the HRLC in September 2011 as a visiting scholar until September 2012. Mr Akyeşilmen's research focused upon the human rights dimensions of Turkey-EU Relations, and its impact on democratisation and political reforms in Turkey. It sought to analyse the development of the EU and Turkish human rights mechanism and the correlation between them. The research also sought to elaborate on some scenarios regarding the enhancement of the human rights regime and practices in Turkey.

2010/11

 

Dr Yik-Chan Chin was awarded a Nottingham Advance Research Fellowship in October 2010. This prestigious two-year fellowship is awarded by the University of Nottingham to outstanding early career researchers in any academic discipline represented at the University. Dr Chin will be part of the HRLC's research team until September 2012. Her research investigates the interplay between law and society in defamation litigation in China, focusing on the interaction between the courts' application of defamation law and the construction of norms on defamation in society. Dr Chin will examine how norms such as the right to freedom of expression are defined and interpreted in local society through the power of discourses mobilised by both domestic and international agents, and their relationship to the development of the courts' legal reasoning in adjudications of defamation cases.

Dr Yauheni Bahdanau joined HRLC in September 2010 for one year as a Chevening Scholar. He previously worked in the Research and Practical Centre of the Belarusian General Prosecutor's Office where he provided criminological expertise for proposed laws. His main research interests include judicial studies, criminal law, criminal procedure and criminology. At HRLC he is carrying out a study of compliance with the European Convention on Human Rights in Belarusian legislation.

2009/10

 

Mehmet Ali Zengin, from the Faculty of Law at Selcuk University in Konya, Turkey, joined HRLC in February 2010. Mr. Zengin's research focuses on bioethics and human rights, exploring the sometimes uneasy relationship between human rights and new biological and medical developments.

Dr Fatih Karaosmanoglu, Professor of International Relations at the Faculty of Security Sciences of the Police Academy in Ankara, Turkey, was a visiting scholar at the HRLC between August - October 2010. Dr Karaosmanoglu investigating themes related to the remedy by which individuals may apply to the Turkish Constitutional Court, a new national procedure for the protection of human rights introduced in September 2010. Dr. Karaosmanoglu conducted comparative research, focusing on different national systems including the UK, France, and Germany.

2008/09

 

Jan Martin Hoffmann, previously PhD candidate and research assistant at the Leibniz University of Hannover. Jan was a Visiting Fellow between October and December 2008. He joined the HRLC to conduct research on the effect of the Human Rights Act 1998 on the UK legal system. He also wrote analyses for the Oxford Reports on International Human Rights Law database.

2007/08

 

Professor Bertrand Ramcharan, former Acting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and Chancellor of the University of Guyana. Professor Ramcharan is currently Director of the Guyana Institute of Public Policy and Senior Human Rights Fellow at the University of Nottingham School of Law. During his tenure as Distinguished Visiting Professor, he presented a series of lectures and seminars.

Paulina Vega, international criminal lawyer, previously Latin American and Caribbean Coordinator at the Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC). Paulina completed the 2008 Chevening Fellows course and was subsequently awarded a fellowship at the Centre to conduct research on victims' protection mechanisms within the framework of a project with REDRESS, a UK-based non-profit organisation. The research considered the structure and practice of the protection measures adopted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), international criminal tribunals and human rights bodies with the aim of presenting improvements to those schemes.

2006/07

 

Elizabeth Gomez, Legal Advisor to the Colombian Attorney General. Elizabeth undertook research within the International Criminal Justice Unit. She prepared a briefing on ratification and implementation of the ICC's Rome Statute in Latin America, South America and the Caribbean.

2003/04

 

Ms Nasrin Mosaffa, Professor at the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences at the University of Tehran and Head of the University's Centre for Human Rights Studies. 

Professor Nii Ashie Kotey, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana. Professor Kotey visited the HRLC as part of the Higher Education Links Programme.

Mr Raymond Atuguba, Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, Legon. Mr Atuguba visited the HRLC as part of the Higher Education Links Programme.

2001/02

 

Ms Zhang Aining, Associate Professor, International Law Department of Foreign Affairs College and Attorney-at-Law, Beijing, China. Ms Aining worked on the production of a human rights textbook for use in the teaching of human rights for law students. This was a joint project between the Foreign Affairs College and China University of Political Sciences.

Dr M Ladan, Amadhu Bello University. Dr Ladan visited the HRLC as part of the Higher Education Links Programme.

Professor Y Akinsey-George, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Professor Akinsey-George visited the HRLC as part of the Higher Education Links Programme.

Mr Fui Tsikata, University of Ghana. Mr Tsikata visited the HRLC as part of the Higher Education Links Programme.

Professor Dr Katarina Tomasevski, Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education of the former UN Commission on Human Rights, Professor of International Law and International Relations at the University of Lund (Raoul Wallenberg Institute and Faculty of Law) and External Lecturer at the Centre for Africa Studies (University of Copenhagen). Professor Tomasevski was a J. C. Smith Visiting Senior Fellow in November 2001.

Dr A P Pant, Associate Professor of Law, Faculty of Law, Tribhuvan University Kathmandu. Dr Pant visited the HRLC as part of the Higher Education Links Programme.

Ms Kusum Saakah, Associate Professor of Law Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal. Ms Saakah visited the HRLC as part of the Higher Education Links Programme.

Professor E V O Dankwa, Law Faculty, University of Ghana, Legon. Professor Dankwa visited the HRLC as part of the Higher Education Links Programme.

Professor Kanak Bikram Thapa, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Tribhuwan University Kathmandu, Nepal. Professor Thapa visited the HRLC as part of the Higher Education Links Programme.
