Scholarships

You can help a student say yes to their place at Nottingham

A place at University can transform a young person’s world. But too many bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds find barriers are in their way.

We believe that talent shouldn’t be wasted because of where people come from or how much money they have. A scholarship could be the difference between lost potential and a future doctor, teacher or scientist.

Talent needs a catalyst. Donate today and you can help students from all backgrounds to say yes to their University dream.

Make dreams a reality

"Receiving the scholarship meant so much – it made it possible for me to take up my place at Nottingham and really throw myself into my studies. But I think it was more than just the money – it was also really special to know that alumni like you have given me this help. To know that you believe in me."

Your support changes lives

With two children at the age of 16, and a spell in foster care, the odds were stacked against Rachel Wiffen. But six years later, Rachel's life has taken a different path. With the support of a scholarship, Rachel is fulfilling her dream to study biochemistry.

“I’d always wanted to go to university. Even when I fell pregnant that never really changed. I went into care after I’d had Callum and Lilly. I had to get away from the situation I was in at the time so that the three of us could be supported”, Rachel said.

“Being such a young mum was a harsh reality but I just got on with it and I never lost sight of the idea of continuing my education. So I finished my GCSEs, got AAB grades at A level and was accepted to study Biochemistry at Nottingham in 2015.

“I bought a laptop with my scholarship so I can work at home. I simply wouldn’t have coped without it! The kindness shown by scholarship donors is having a major impact on my family and our future."

“It’s like I have a second chance at life. I thought the idea of becoming a scientist was beyond my reach but now I’ve got the tools and confidence to go for it. This degree is the hardest thing I’ve ever done but it’s a life changing experience.”

Every year hundreds of scholarships and bursaries at Nottingham are funded through donations from people like you. All gifts - small and large - can help a bright, determined student like Rachel achieve more than they ever thought possible.

Tia's story

"My scholarship was a great help in my first year. Society activities cost money so it helped me get properly involved in University life. It also helped ease the pressure when I needed to find a deposit for my second year house share, while studying for my exams. This year, I’m hoping it will help me plan my study abroad trip to Germany which I’m really excited about.”
