Biography

Alexus McNally is a legal scholar, writer, and practitioner whose work focuses on global justice, human rights, and criminal legal reform. She has worked across the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the United States on access-to-justice initiatives, strategic litigation, and community-driven legal empowerment. Before joining the University of Nottingham as a Teaching Associate, she served with organisations including the International Legal Foundation and Incarceration Nations Network and has written for Time Magazine, Jurist News, and other outlets. Alexus brings an interdisciplinary approach to law, blending research, advocacy, and public-facing storytelling across multiple platforms.

Alexus teaches Criminal Law, Criminal Justice Practice and Procedure, Current Issues in International Human Rights Law, and Introduction to Law and Legal Theory. Her teaching approach is grounded in critical engagement, accessibility, and student-centred learning. She draws on her international legal practice to help students connect doctrinal principles with real-world contexts, encouraging reflection on how law functions across diverse societies. In the classroom, she prioritises discussion-based learning, practical reasoning, and the development of strong legal research and writing skills. Alexus also supports students through academic advising and mentorship, with a particular commitment to widening participation and fostering an inclusive learning environment.

Current Research

Alexus's research explores comparative criminal justice, pretrial detention practices, and the global circulation of carceral policies. She is particularly interested in how structural inequality and legacies of colonialism shape contemporary legal systems, as well as the ways communities resist punitive state power. Her work also investigates legal empowerment movements, youth justice, and the relationship between law, social narratives, and international development. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Law at Trinity College Dublin, examining the impact of colonisation on access to justice and fair trial rights.
