Following the launch of a new undergraduate programme in the School of Medicine and plans to build a state-of-the-art Clinical Teaching Centre, new study space areas are being created in George Green and Greenfield Medical libraries to support students.
These changes will provide an improved study experience with more of the types of spaces you want. We know from your feedback that you’d like to see more of the popular bookable pods, booths and group spaces in our libraries.
Work will start in the libraries in March, and it is hoped that the spaces will be ready to use by August 2026. Making these changes will mean some unavoidable disruption but we will keep you updated throughout.
What changes are planned?
In both libraries we will be moving or removing bookshelves to make space for the new study spaces.
In George Green Library, there will be updates to study spaces on B, C and E floors including the introduction of new tables, booths and enhanced study pods.
At Greenfield Medical Library, the changes will be more extensive with changes to the zoning of the space, introduction of two new larger bookable study spaces and individual pods, and new lighting, electrics and decoration.
Will there be any disruption?
Throughout the improvement works there will be planned disruption across both libraries. This will include at times:
- noise disruption due to drilling etc
- restricted access to certain space and resources
We apologise for the disruption these changes will cause but these are necessary in order to deliver the new spaces ready for the 2026/27 academic year.
Throughout this period, we will be supporting you to access the resources and spaces you need by sharing the latest updates on boards in the libraries and on the Libraries Instagram and website. Library staff will be available to provide support and guidance on available study space (including accessibility guidance) and access to resources which may have moved.
More information will be shared before the works start, including maps of affected areas and visualisations of the new spaces.
If you have any questions, please ask a member of Library staff or get in touch by phone, email or Live Chat.
