Why did you choose to come to Nottingham?

Nottingham is a high performing university, particularly in science. It does good research and a good reputation. The campus and its proximity to the city centre by efficient public transport is unparalleled but accommodation and living are still affordable. Staff seemed professional and students positive on open/offer holder days. It is also a good distance from home.

Why did you choose to study Natural Sciences?

Natural Sciences provided me with an opportunity to experience three subjects, all of which I enjoyed at A-level at university level. This enabled me to delay the decision and make a more informed choice as to which subject(s) I would like to pursue further down the road. I also thought that it would be more interesting to be studying content from different subjects each day, as opposed to a single area.

What advice would you give someone starting university?

I think most students are concerned about the unknown of starting university; unprecedented independence and not knowing anyone. However, its important to remember that everyone is in exactly the same boat. People are generally very friendly and there are more opportunities to meet new people than you could go to. With so many people joining at once, its easy to find some that you get along with.

What aspect of the course do you enjoy most and why?

I have most enjoyed the opportunity this year to potentially contribute something new to science in our synoptic group project. It’s surprising that this is possible as an undergraduate but its been great fun to think that our work could be used to further actual scientific understanding.

What do you do outside of the course and how has this impacted your university experience?

I have been an active member and, since second year, a committee member of NatSci Soc (natural sciences society) and have greatly enjoyed contributing to and being a part of the subject family. I have played various sports for hall teams and subject teams and have met a range of people. These things can seem minor but really enhance the university experience, widen your group of friends and allow you to try out new things!

What are you thinking about doing when you finish?

I am planning to apply to study a PhD after graduating at the end of fourth year. I have enjoyed learning about topics in depth and would like to take it even further and contribute some research of my own.
