University award for 'outstanding contribution' to UK-China Relations

The University of Nottingham has won the prestigious ‘Services to Education’ category at the Hurun Awards which took place earlier this week in London.

The Hurun Report is a leading luxury publishing group based in Shanghai. It is widely recognised as on of the foremost authorities for tracking the rapid changes amongst China’s high net worth individuals.

The awards are aimed to honour those who have made outstanding contributions to UK China Relations in trade, culture, education and sport. The award for the University of Nottingham was in recognition of the strong links it has made with China, particularly through its campus in Ningbo, on China’s eastern coast, close to Shanghai.

First campus in China
The University of Nottingham became the first foreign university to establish an independent campus in China at Ningbo. It was developed in partnership with the Wanli Education Group and opened to students in 2004. There are now almost 7,000 students in total on the Ningbo campus.

As a result of the Ningbo campus, Nottingham has developed very strong links with businesses and government in China. These relationships have led to a number of significant research projects being undertaken.

Chinese businesses
Through its Asia Business Centre, the University has also built relationships with some of China’s biggest companies, including aerospace giant, AVIC; railway company, China Railway Rolling Stock; the China Resources Pharmaceutical Group; car manufacturers FAW and Changan and many others. In addition, the University has also enabled small businesses in the Nottingham area to build links with China.

Speaking about the success of the University of Nottingham, Rupert Hoogewerf, the Chairman of the Hurun Report, said: “The award is well deserved. It is amazing to see how the University has gone far beyond Nottingham and Ningbo, leveraging education to foster cultural and business relations.  In addition, Nottingham students go on to become proud ambassadors both of the UK and China.”

Commitment
Professor Nick Miles OBE, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement at the University of Nottingham, attended the award ceremony. He said: “It’s a tremendous honour to receive this award, not just for the University but in recognition of the commitment of many people in government, business and other organisations, in both the UK and China, who have contributed to the development of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China campus.” 

Alongside  the University of Nottingham, other award winners on the night included Bank of China for its services to finance and retail banking, China's largest commercial property company Wanda Group, for its services to real estate in the UK, and Landrover for its services to building a British brand in China.
