Hand Hygiene Guidelines

Three Types of Hand Hygiene

Routine Hand Hygiene

Use soap and running water for 30 seconds and dry thoroughly being careful not to contaminate your clean hands or rub an application of alcohol handrub into your hands and wrists until dry (using a six step process - details of which are provided in the document link below).

Hand Disinfection

Wash hands and wrists using the six step process either with soap and running water for 30 seconds and dry thoroughly being careful not to contaminate your clean hands and/or by an application of alcohol handrub.

Surgical Handwash

• Apply an antimicrobial agent to the hands, wrists and forearms up to the elbows.
• Wash for at least 2 minutes.
• A sterile nail brush may be used for the initial surgical handwash.
• If an antimicrobial agent is inappropriate, use soap and running water followed by two or more applications of alcohol handrub.
