Assessment of Power of the Upper and Lower Limbs
Comparing patient's power to own strength.
Remember "normal" power may vary depending on the patient which is why it is very important to always compare sides.
Think about the size and strength of the muscles you are testing.
Upper Limb
- Abduction and Adduction of shoulders
- Flexion and extension of elbow
- Flexion and extension of wrist
- Power grip
Lower Limb
- Flexion and Extension of hip
- Abduction and adduction of hip
- Flexion and Extension of knee
- Dorsi and Plantar flexion of foot
- Dorsiflexion of toes
Method for Describing Muscle Power
| Grade | Description |
|---|---|
| 5 | Normal |
| 4 | Weak, but can overcome gravity and some resistance |
| 3 | Very weak, but can overcome gravity |
| 2 | Able to move the limb only if supported against gravity |
| 1 | A flicker or trace of contraction |
