School of Pharmacy

Athena SWAN silver award for the School

The School of Pharmacy has been recognised for its work in promoting and advancing the careers of women by the award of a Silver SWAN (Scientific Women's Academic Network Award) award.

Professor Anne Willis, Professor of Cancer Cell Biology, who coordinated the school's submission said: “It is delightful news that the school has been recognised for its commitment to the Athena SWAN aims. In recent years the proportion of female research and academic staff has increased markedly which is testament to a number of new policies introduced within the School to promote the progression of female staff.”

The judges applauded the school's success in recruiting female members of staff and the acknowledgement of their contribution to the success of the School. There was also recognition of the support provided for promotion and career development as well as opportunities for flexible working.

Launched in 2005, the Athena SWAN Charter is a scheme which recognises excellence in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) employment in higher education.  Any university or research institution which is committed to the advancement and promotion of the careers of women in SET in higher education and research can apply for membership. In the 2009 round of awards, the University also saw its Bronze award renewed for a further three years.

Professor Kevin Shakesheff, Head of School, said: “I am thrilled with the award. The advancement of science is our business and further success will only be achieved when women and men can benefit equally from the opportunities that science affords.”

The presentation will be made at a celebratory lunch at Birmingham Botanical Gardens on Tuesday 29 September.
