Professor Kevin Shakesheff takes over

Professor Kevin Shakesheff

Kevin Shakesheff, Professor of Drug Delivery and Tissue Engineering, has been appointed as Head of School for a period of four years starting from August 2009. Kevin is an alumnus of the School attaining a BPharm in 1991. He also undertook his PhD in the School after which he was awarded a NATO Postdoctoral Fellowship to work with Professor Bob Langer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Kevin went on to hold an EPSRC Advanced Fellowship within the School and was promoted to a Chair in 2001.

Kevin's research focuses on materials that enhance drug delivery and tissue regeneration and has led to the formation of two successful spin-out companies: RegenTec Ltd and Critical Pharmaceuticals Ltd. His world-leading research was recognized in 2007 when he received the Research Achievement Award at the Pharmaceutical Sciences World Congress.

Speaking of his appointment, Professor Shakesheff said: “I am delighted to be taking over as leader of an exceptionally strong School and looking forward to helping to take the School from strength to strength over the coming years.” 

Professor Shakesheff takes over from Professor Saul Tendler who has served as Head of the School for 6 years. Professor Tendler has been appointed a Pro-Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for teaching and learning as well as for Schools in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
