During her undergraduate studies, Rita took part in several research projects related to drug formulation and HIV. In 2012, she did an ERASMUS placement at the Pharmaceutics department at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn in Germany where she studied the thermal behaviour of starch and gum blends as carriers on API/plasticizer hot-melt extruded blends under the supervision of Dr. Hubert Rein. As a part of her MPham, Rita also had the opportunity to have contact with the hospital and community pharmacy as pre-registration training. After graduation, she joined Generis Farmacêutica, a Portuguese generic medicines company, for eighteen months as a Quality Assurance Technician (for 3 months) and later as a Secondary Manufacturing Supervisor. In September 2014, Rita joined the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) for Advanced Therapeutics and Nanomedicines as a postgraduate research student, based at UCL School of Pharmacy. Her first training project investigated a chitosan derivate in the effective delivery of siRNA under the supervision of Dr. Andreas Schäztlein and Prof. Ijeoma Uchegbu. Currently, she is working on her second training project in the Physical Properties department at GlaxoSmithKline, Stevenage.
