Biography

Mr Nicholas Hobson is a postgraduate student in the Targeted Therapeutics and Formulation Sciences Centre for Doctoral Training based at the UCL School of Pharmacy. Mr Hobson graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2011 with an MSci in Chemistry (Class I). His undergraduate research focused on the design and synthesis of fluorescently labelled complexes that had the ability to bind to DNA.

Since 2012, Mr Hobson has had a position in the Targeted Therapeutics and Formulation Sciences Centre for Doctoral Training. The centre is jointly run between UCL and the University of Nottingham. During his time here, Mr Hobson has worked on the formulation of novel, flexible solid oral dosage forms for use in the pediatric population and also, the design and synthesis of theranostic (diagnostic and therapeutic) nanoparticles for applications in personalised medicine.

Cancer, largely a disease of ageing, is associated with mortality figures (157,275 in 2010) that are directly fuelled by metastasis. Understanding the biological interactions between metastatic cells and bioengineered theranostic (therapeutic and diagnostic) platforms could provide a means of reducing these mortality figures.
