Melvyn's research focuses on proxy war, with an emphasis on the application of theory to inform our understanding of the sponsor/proxy relationship. His research examines how the advent of regional powers in the international order, as the world became polyarchic, requires a reassessment of how proxy war is interpreted. It investigates connections among protagonists that drive actions and build experiences. It explores how the ideas and interests of actors create the power dynamic between sponsor and proxy. An aim is to reveal what molds the power dynamic that can assist policymakers in making better choices.
Whilst the Yemen Civil War is used as a case study, his research findings will be used to assess how generic they are to the concept of proxy war.
