Luke Butler discusses the potential implications of Brexit for defence procurement regulation at a joint Kings' College London and George Washington University event titled "Post-Brexit UK Procurement: The Pending Wave of Reform"

On 20 April 2021, Dr Luke Butler was invited to speak at a joint Kings' College London and George Washington University event titled "Post-Brexit UK Procurement: The Pending Wave of Reform". This webinar event was convened to examine potential implications of recent proposals for reform of the UK public procurement system in several key areas. Luke's presentation focused on defence procurement. Defence procurement is politically and economically significant within the context of overall public expenditure and has been the subject ongoing regulatory reform even before Brexit on the issue of single source contract pricing. However, defence procurement regulation has received relatively little attention in public debate on the proposed reforms. The presentation considered the UK's international obligations under key international procurement instruments and the potential direction of domestic regulatory reform within the overall context of the UK's new Defence Security and Industrial Strategy. The event was moderated by Mr. Christopher Vajda QC (former judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union) and comprised leading practitioners and academics from universities including Oxford, Bristol and Nottingham.
