Awards
The School of Psychology has been awarded Athena Swan Gold in November 2025 in recognition of its excellence in supporting gender equality. This recognises the School’s deep and sustained commitment to supporting gender equality within higher education and research amongst staff and students. Athena SWAN principles are deeply embedded within our School and good practice is shared both within the University and externally with other institutions. Our goal is to create an inclusive culture for all our staff and students so they may thrive in their work, study and professional development.
What is Athena Swan and why is it important?
Athena Swan is a gender equality charter which was established in 2005 and is an accredited scheme managed by Advance HE. It encourages higher education institutions to identify and address barriers to gender equality in relation to representation and progression of all staff and students. Although initially the charter focussed on advancement of women in STEMM (Science Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine), it now aims to address barriers to gender equality more broadly across a full range of academic subjects.
An Athena Swan application involves undertaking a self-assessment of the School’s processes and policies through examining staff and student data to understand areas where positive action may be needed. It also allows us to identify areas of best practice that have helped to create a more inclusive culture within the School.
