Darren is a member of the Future Food leadership team. Darren's research addresses fundamental and applied questions in plant biology using transdisciplinary approaches, in recent years focussing on integrated plant phenomics.  He is a co-director of the Hounsfield Facility for Rhizosphere Research where he has established the UK’s first Laser Ablation Tomography (LAT) facility for phenotyping plant anatomy.  He has published >60 peer-reviewed research articles in journals including Nature, PNAS and Plant Cell.  As well as managing the LAT facility, Dr Wells established and co-manages the Beacon-funded MakerSpace, a resource for developing innovative solutions to support research.
