Festo is the Executive Director of the Future Food Beacon Malaysia, and is a member of the Future Food leadership team. 

Festo’s research is focused on improving productivity, quality and value of food crops especially of minor and underutilized species. He has strong interest in building sustainable and resilient food systems by developing climate resilient and nutritious crop varieties and sustainable crop production practices. Prof Massawe is currently researching bambara groundnut, winged bean, amaranth and oil palm, working closely with partners in Africa, Asia and Europe. He is also interested in food environments in transitioning economies and how these could be shaped to deliver sustainable and healthy diets.

Prior to joining the University of Nottingham Malaysia in 2006, he worked for the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), University of Nottingham, UK, Open University of Tanzania and Unilever Tea.
