Dr Andrew Clarke

Andrew’s research is focused on the history of human–plant relationships, particularly on using genetics to understand the origins, selection, dispersal and future of crops.

Andrew is responsible for establishing the University’s Ancient DNA Laboratory, a new facility for the analysis of low copy DNA from archaeological contexts, museum objects and the natural environment. He is also involved with the Beacon’s project on food systems in island countries, together with colleagues at the Malaysia campus. He is a Visiting Researcher at the University of York. 

Prior to joining Nottingham in 2019, Andrew was a Fellow of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge. He was previously a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Warwick and the University of Otago, New Zealand. He has a PhD in Plant Biology from Massey University, New Zealand.
