Three Cities Fighting Slavery

Three Cities Fighting Slavery is a 55-minute documentary examining modern slavery and labour exploitation in cities on three continents: Nottingham in the UK, Maputo in Mozambique, and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Local initiatives to fight the practice and themes such as migration, child marriage and labour exploitation in the textile industry are addressed parallel to a historical reconstitution of African slavery, focusing on the UK, Mozambique, and Brazil's involvement. Three Cities Fighting Slavery is directed by the Brazilian director Luiz Eduardo Lerina and is an outcome of the Project Global Cities Free of Slavery (GCFL), funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC, 2020-22). Dr Silvia Pinheiro from the International Relations Department at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro coordinated the GCFL project with the participation of researchers and NGOs from the UK, Mozambique, Thailand and Brazil. The documentary has participated in film festivals, including the Political Film Festival in Los Angeles (Best Feature Film winner) and the Black Feedback Film Festival in New York.
