The work between the University of Nottingham and the company Camstent Ltd has been shortlisted for the Most Innovative Contribution to Business-University Collaboration category at this year’s Times Higher Education Awards, as well as for the Faculty of Science award at the Knowledge Exchange and Impact Awards 2018.
Bacteria-resistant materials discovered at the University of Nottingham in 2012 have been developed with Camstent Ltd for coating medical devices (Foley catheters). After extensive product development, this device was awarded a CE mark in 2017 and was approved for use in UK and European hospitals. Devices are being trialled in six UK hospitals to determine whether promising laboratory results translate into significantly reduced infection rates and lower costs for patients long-term. Medical device-associated infections can lead to systemic infections and device failure, costing the NHS >£1bn/year (see the recent press release here).
The team are delighted to be shortlisted for the 14th annual THE Awards, affectionately known as the "Oscars of higher education". There were 18 categories and the University’s work with Camstent earned a shortlist for the Most Innovative Contribution to Business-University Collaboration category. The
Knowledge Exchange and Impact Awards 2018 received 80 entries over nine award categories, and the judging panels have praised the standard of entries across the University. There are three shortlisted projects per category and the full shortlist will be announced shortly. The awards evening, hosted by Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West, will take place on Thursday 22 November at East Midlands Conference Centre. The special occasion will include a three-course dinner, awards presentations and a performance from the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music.
