Morgan Alexander awarded the British Vacuum 2017 Senior prize
Morgan Alexander was awarded the British Vacuum 2017 Senior Prize at the Advanced Vacuum Society (AVS), before his Biointerfaces Plenary Lecture: 'Engineering a Paradigm Shift in Control of Microbes and Fouling'. The past president of the British Vacuum Council, Alex Shard, presented the John Yarwood Medal to Morgan before he delivered his Plenary Lecture. Alex said the following about this achievement:
“Morgan Alexander is recognised internationally for his ground-breaking development of high throughput surface characterisation which has created a new era of high throughput biomaterials discovery. This seminal research has led to the discovery of a new class of materials with superior properties that resist bacterial cell attachment and biofilm formation and novel materials for the control of pluripotent stem cell expansion and differentiation".

Alexander and his team have pioneered the development of automated surface characterisation of molecular structure using time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF SIMS), elemental and functional quantification using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and topography using atomic force microscopy (AFM). This has enabled the surface characterisation of novel combinatorial microarrays with 1700 materials with an estimated speed enhancement of 200 times. Of critical importance, this allowed measurement in a similar 3 day time period to that of the biological assessment giving dynamic fed back into a next generation of material library design.”
