Prof Derclaye and Prof Torremans contribute to the review of the database directive

The European Commission (DG Connect) is contemplating revising the database directive in the last quarter of 2021, as part of its European Strategy for Data. The database directive protects databases by copyright and a specific intellectual property right, the sui generis right.

In February 2021, they contacted Prof Paul Torremans and Prof Derclaye separately and they both had a meeting with their staff to exchange ideas on the review of the directive and the protection of data in the EU. Prof Derclaye was one of lead experts writing the study commissioned by DG Connect to prepare their report evaluating the directive in 2018.
