Essays on Eddic Poetry

The University of Toronto Press has just issued Essays on Eddic Poetry by John McKinnell, Emeritus Professor at Durham University. The volume presents a selection of important articles (originally published between 1988 and 2008) on Old Norse literature. While McKinnell’s work addresses many of the perennial issues in the study of Old Norse, this collection has a special focus on the interplay between heathen and Christian world-views in the poems. The twelve essays cover a wide range of mythological and heroic poems and have been revised and updated to reflect the latest scholarship.

The volume has a twofold connection with Nottingham - it was edited (along with Donata Kick) by John McKinnell's former student, Dr John D. Shafer, now Honorary Visiting Fellow in the CSVA. John McKinnell was also the first person to teach Old Norse to Professor Judith Jesch, Director of the CSVA.
