Research Summary

Deuterium magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS), in vivo, using various deuterium-labeled substrates:

• Deuterium oxide (D₂O, heavy water) can potentially be used to measure lipid turnover via deuterium incorporation into triglycerides, and muscle-fibre organisation via the magnitude and angular-dependence or the quadrupolar splitting of the water spectrum.
• Glucose ([6,6'-D₂]glucose or [1,2,3,4,5,6,6'-D₇]glucose) can be used to measure glucose uptake and metabolism (via detection of lactate and glutamine/glutamate) in tissues for physiological studies or detection of tumours.
