Design Innovation for Dementia and Ageing Well

Speaker: Dr Emmanuel Tsekleves (Lancaster University)

Design has the propensity to contribute significantly in complex or 'wicked problems' by introducing new perspectives and creative thinking to stimulate innovation. This lecture aims at presenting how design innovation research can contribute to research in the areas of dementia and ageing well. Several cases studies in the areas of playful design and design fiction will showcase the opportunities in this area.

As emergent technologies and governments policies shape our futures what are the potential consequences and implications for us, as individuals and society at large? What might these futures/imagined worlds, look like? What problems might be revealed? What might we learn by designing products and services for these imagined futures? Following his research and an article in the Guardian, Emmanuel will present how research-to-date has employed design fictions to engage audiences in the design and debate around future technologies, services and societies. Play is one of the main drivers of the human cultural development. Play and playfulness can add joy to life, relieve stress, stimulate social interaction boost creativity, connect us to others and the world around us.

In his talk Emmanuel will explore and present the benefits and value of play and playfulness in dementia and in ageing well.
