Prepare for your course

Congratulations and a very warm welcome to the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. We are looking forward to meeting you soon. As a new member of this vibrant community, you will be taught and supported by leading teaching and research academics and engineering professionals who are committed to inspirational teaching. We hope you have a wonderful learning experience during your studies with us, and we are looking forward to sharing this journey with you. If you are unsure about anything in these early weeks do not be afraid to ask questions or seek help from our academic and support staff.

What to expect

Teaching and learning

The department is proud to have evolved a strong and supportive learning environment, underpinned by best teaching and professional engineering practice. The department staff will deliver live weekly teaching sessions to published teaching timetables. To assist personal study planning, module coursework timetables are published for all degree programmes. We will deliver all learning materials in person and aim to create a lively, interactive and enriching learning experience. We endeavour to deliver the most appropriate learning environments and methods to support the learning of new and often challenging engineering theory methods and applications.

Lectures, seminars, and problem classes will incorporate a blend of different learning resources, that may range from interactive quizzes to peer-assessed problems, using appropriate digital learning technologies. Consequently, we strongly encourage active participation and attendance during these learning experiences to get the most from your studies and to immerse yourself within the CEE community.

Assessment

All examination assessments in the 2023/24 academic year will be delivered as in-person assessments.

IT Equipment

You will need access to a laptop or device to participate in lectures and complete online learning.  Whether you already have a device or are considering purchasing new IT equipment for your university studies, please check the minimum specification recommended by Digital and Technology Services.

We would suggest you use an MS Windows 10 system for ease of access to our commonly used systems, and to use some of the specialist engineering software for your studies.

You do not need to purchase any software; Microsoft Office is available to download free of charge to all students for the duration of their studies and specialist engineering software is available in our on-campus computer rooms and through a remote desktop connection.

There are computer rooms available on campus and a laptop loan service. All students (home and international) who might struggle with financing IT equipment can apply for support via the Hardship Fund.
