Evaluation and judgement

Whilst studying at Nottingham you may be encouraged to come to your own point of view and to present your position using supportive evidence whilst rebutting alternative explanations and perspectives. In doing so you will be using your skills of evaluation and your sense of judgement.

As you develop these skills, you will move from simply asserting your own opinions to being able to argue and defend your views.

Although you should check your own School's guidance and marking criteria, the following points are usually valued academically.

Check list:

• Have you considered all possibilities?
• Did you rebut, with supportive evidence, alternative explanations?
• Have you collected, presented and interpreted evidence that supports your arguments?
• Have you pointed out the weaknesses in evidence that seems to run counter to your arguments?
• Did you use a logical structure and progression in the way you presented your arguments?
• Have you explained your assumptions?
• Did you clearly link your evidence with the conclusions you have drawn?
• Don't over claim or extrapolate in drawing your conclusions.
