Experimental Investigations in Bearings, Seals and Gear Windage

The UTC has been working with Rolls-Royce for over twenty five years to deliver high-quality experimental data and analysis to support design development.  Both quantitative and qualitative approaches are used to capture the details of oil and air motion within bespoke test modules. Approaches such as Particle Image Velocimetry, Brightness Based Laser Induced Fluorescence and High-Speed Visualisation are used in conjunction with sensors for point measurements to develop a detailed analysis of the movement of multi-phase flow within confined spaces bounded by rotating surfaces.  These techniques, and the capabilities of the test facilities enable in-house generation of validation data for our modelling work.
