Electro-mechanical Engineer Degree Apprentice Finalist in Apprentice of the Year at the RailStaff Awards 2025

We are delighted to share that Nathan Pattinson, a fourth-year apprentice on our Electro-mechanical Engineer Degree Apprenticeship is a finalist for Apprentice of the Year at the RailStaff Awards 2025. The award celebrates outstanding apprentices making a remarkable impact early in their careers.

Nathan’s apprenticeship journey began in 2019 when he joined AECOM as a Level 3 Apprentice Engineer before progressing to the University of Nottingham’s Electro-mechanical Engineer Degree Apprenticeship programme in 2022. During this time, he has demonstrated exceptional technical ability, professionalism, and a deep commitment to learning. His expertise spans a wide range of disciplines, evident in his impressive project portfolio.

Since starting my apprenticeship in 2019 I have had the opportunity to work with many teams and talented individuals on a range of projects, which has allowed me to gain the skills and knowledge required to develop and grow as an engineer.

He has contributed to numerous third-rail electrification schemes across the southern region. His involvement in the Thameslink Resilience programme and Cardiff West points heating renewals showcases his adaptability and technical depth, while his work on static modelling of catenary systems highlights his willingness to push boundaries and contribute to innovation beyond his core discipline.

But Nathan’s impact goes beyond engineering. As a former Chairman of AECOM’s UK&I Shadow Board, he has championed employee engagement and supported new recruits, helping shape a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture. His active participation in community support days and his approachable nature have made him a respected figure across the organisation.
