The first phase of Jubilee Campus was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1999 and its state-of-the-art facilities now include:
-
the Schools of Education and Computer Science
-
The Nottingham University Business School
-
The National College for School Leadership
-
a Sports Centre
Built on a site that previously had industrial use, Jubilee Campus is an exemplar of brownfield regeneration and has impeccable green credentials.
An important feature of the campus is the series of lakes which, as well as being home to a variety of wildlife, provide storm water attenuation and cooling for the buildings.
Less visible - but equally important to the sustainable campus – are the:
-
roofs covered by low-growing alpine plants which help insulate and maintain steady temperatures within the buildings throughout the year
-
super-efficient mechanical ventilation systems
-
lighting sensors to reduce energy consumption
-
photovoltaic cells integrated into the atrium roofs
The environmentally-friendly nature of the campus and its buildings have been a big factor in the awards that it has received, including:
-
the Millennium Marque Award for Environmental Excellence
-
the British Construction Industry Building Project of the Year
-
the Royal Institute of British Archtiects (RIBA) Journal Sustainability Award
-
the Civic Trust Award for Sustainability
The Jubilee Campus also won international praise with the Energy Globe Award in 2005.
-
In 2006, a 10 year Masterplan for development and expansion of the campus was produced by Ken Shuttleworth, designer of the iconic and award winning London ‘gherkin’
-
In 2008, three new landmark buildings and a 60m high steel structure ‘
Aspire’ – the tallest piece of public artwork in the UK - were completed
-
The 12 acre University of Nottingham Innovation Park (UNIP) was also established in 2008, providing incubator and grow-on space for new businesses, research and innovation
