Biography

Andrew joined the University in 2013 as a postdoctoral research fellow, working with Professor Chris Moody on the "Design and synthesis of sp3-rich scaffolds for medicinal chemistry" funded by the European Lead Factory. In 2015, Andrew was appointed as GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Teaching Fellow in Medicinal Chemistry with a primary role to teach a collaborative medicinal chemistry module with GSK, a global pharmaceutical company with historic links to Nottingham through former Chancellor, Sir Andrew Witty. In 2019, Andrew was promoted to Assistant Professor followed by a further promotion to Associate Professor in 2023.

Andrew has established himself as an expert in teaching and learning medicinal chemistry within the School, delivering high-quality undergraduate teaching and practical projects and supporting research colleagues in medicinal chemistry research. Andrew is a leader of our "Industry-Ready Graduates" strategy - graduates that are suitably prepared for careers within the pharmaceutical industry. Andrew collaborates with organisations across the sector to coordinate this, including GlaxoSmithKline, the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) and deepmatter. With DNDi, Andrew leads an international active-learning project in medicinal chemistry project with a network of University academics from across the world through the Open Synthesis Network.

Andrew leads our three Chemistry, with Medicinal and Biological Chemistry (MBC) degree programmes as course director. Andrew is also Head of Year 4 in the School of Chemistry contributes to the Teaching Strategy Group and Student-Staff Community Forum.

Andrew is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and leads an enhancement-based approach to laboratory teaching and championing teaching recognition for postgraduate demonstrators. Andrew has received two Teaching Excellence Awards from the School of Chemistry (2019 and 2022). Andrew was awarded a University of Nottingham Lord Dearing Award for Teaching and Learning in 2023.

From 2019 to 2022, Andrew was Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for the School of Chemistry, chairing the EDI committee, representing the School at Faculty and University level, and leading the embedding of EDI in all aspects of working at the University, including teaching and learning. Andrew continues to work in the EDI field at the University, chairing the School of Chemistry LGBTQ+ Network and sitting on our Athena SWAN/EDI committee. Andrew is also leading our Decolonising the Chemistry Curriculum project. Andrew was named an inaugural University EDI Champion in 2023.

Andrew is currently seconded 0.2 FTE to the School of Education to serve as Faculty of Science PGCHE Advisor.

Industry Laboratory Skills for Teaching Laboratories, development of new laboratory experiments to provide unique skill development experiences for undergraduates. In collaboration with deepmatterTM (Glasgow), (digitisation of chemistry), Dr Ellis O'Neill (Chemical Biology), Dr Miriam O'Duill (Sustainable Metal Catalysis), Dr James Cuthbertson and Dr Mattia Silvi (Photoredox catalysis), School of Chemistry, University of Nottingham

My drug discovery research is in the following area:

Neglected diseases drug discovery, collaboration with the Drugs for Neglected Disease initiative, and 7 other international university partners.

Recent Publications

I deliver a research-informed curriculum in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery as module convenor for two modules (CHEM3022 and CHEM4025) and contribute to laboratory modules developing experimental projects in organic and medicinal chemistry, including leading a global teaching collaboration with teaching focussed colleagues from seven international Universities in the development of novel antiparasitic agents to which our third-year laboratories contribute. In 2021, I am the laboratory coordinator for organic chemistry projects in the third-year modules CHEM3005, CHEM3015 and CHEM3027.
