Biography
Sarah Doxat-Pratt is a research fellow for the Leverhulme funded project 'Penal Supervision in Comparative Context', led by Professor Nicola Carr, which compares the practice and experience of community supervision across five different nations: England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Sarah was awarded an MA and PhD from the Music Department at the University of Nottingham. Completed in 2018, her doctorate examined notions of effectiveness and value in prison-based music projects. She then worked as a Research Assistant on the Comparative Penology project at the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge, comparing the experience of imprisonment in England & Wales and Norway.
From 2019-2023, she was the Research Associate for the Inspiring Futures project, an evaluation of the meaning and impact of arts programmes in Criminal Justice settings. Funded by the ESRC, the 4-year study was a collaboration between the Institute of Criminology, the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance, and eight arts partner organisations, using qualitative and quantitative methods to understand the impact of arts programmes on participants in prisons and in community justice settings such as probation, as well as the wider impact of such work including on prisons and prison staff, arts facilitators and organisations, and the publics who engaged with the creative products.
Sarah has also worked as an independent researcher for a number of smaller projects, including an evaluation of a prison-based film-making project focused on prisoner wellbeing and suicide prevention; and a multi-disciplinary team investigation into the results of the Everyone In campaign in response to the pandemic for those facing severe and multiple disadvantage in Nottingham. She has taught various modules and seminars in both Music and Criminology departments, and has also worked as a community musician in different settings.
