Research interests
Sheila is very interested in the production of Iron age coins based on her work on the Old Sleaford coin pellet moulds; there has recently been much interest in these since the discovery of vast quantities of Corieltauvian 1/2 staters at Hallaton in Leicestershire, the vast majority of which are of the correct size to have possibly produced these coins. These are currently being studied at the British Museum by Ian Leins, and I hope there may be an opportunity of linking the Old Sleaford finds via analysis of the silver.
Another interest is in the work of the early Ministry of Works excavators in the 1950s and 60s; people like Brian and Helen O’Neil, Ernest Greenfield, Margaret and Tom Jones and Nottingham’s Gavin Simpson. These people worked to a very high standard but were paid for the excavation but not for any post excavation work and the Jones at least worked under some very primitive conditions. Sheila was Margaret Jones’ literary executor and the archive is now in the Department.
