Samian E-Resources

One of the aims in creating the Felix Oswald Database was to provide researchers and Roman Pottery specialists with comparative samples and identification aid for:

  • Identifying a samian name stamp: all of the names stamps are available for viewing as rubbings and readings.
  • Identifying samian fabrics: 27 colour images of samian fabrics taken using a stereomicroscope at x20 magnification are available for viewing online.
  • Finding parallels for a potter or a decoration. All of decorated samian vessels are available for viewing as rubbings.

This new resource has been widely advertised in various media, including the Study Group for Roman Pottery website and newsletter and at conferences and proceedings:

  • Monteil, G. and Faber, E. 2010. Les Céramiques Sigillées de la Collection Oswald-Plicque du Musée de l’Université de Nottingham, 723-9 in SFECAG, Actes du Congrès de Colmar, 2009.
